The
Grottoes Christmas Parade

| This
is the second year our youth entered a float in the Grottoes Christmas Parade,
which was held on Sunday December 8, 2002. Over 25 hours of planning, designing,
preparing, making, painting and building went into this project. The theme of
this year’s float was "Christmas around the World" using John 3:16
as scripture……. "For God loved the world so much that he gave his only
Son….." (TEV). |

The youth, leaders and their families worked together on this evangelistic
project. Caitlin and Rachel are seen here painting the background of one of the
many signs used. |

Many Saturday and Sunday afternoons were spent together working. Ashlee and
Willie carefully paint the lettering for the words. |

After the paint dried, Kortnee and David outlined the words in black for
better visibility. |

One group was painting and making signs while another group worked on
building the "world". Sam and Jeremy designed and cut out the pieces
for the world and the platform it sat upon. Then they started putting the pieces
together. Thanks to Tommy Patterson, who let us use his trailer and building, we
were able to construct this float ahead of time. |

With Jeremy, John and David’s help the "world" began to take
shape. |

On parade day, the trailer was moved to Grottoes where the signs and
Christmas lights were added. The frame of the "world" was covered with
black plastic. |

On top of the black plastic went the covering for the world. It was made from
three very long pieces (36 in. wide) of white material which was sewn together
by Beth. Next, Gail drew the continents on. Then our painters went to work
filling in the continents with green paint. These two jobs were done ahead of
time. David is seen here using a ladder while helping to apply the fabric to the
"world" frame. |

Everyone wore Christmas hats and used
blankets to stay warm. It was a very cold night. There was snow still on the
ground from a recent storm.
Ashlee, Caitlin, and Jason practice
their smiles and saying "Merry Christmas" before the parade starts. |

One of the many signs made were "Merry Christmas" in different
languages. Some were held while others were fastened to the side of the float.
Rachel and Willie hold "Mele Kalikimaka" which is Merry Christmas in
Hawaiian. |

Kristin, Amy and Ellena hold "Feliz Navidad" which is Merry
Christmas in Spanish. |

Due to everyone’s hard work our float was awarded 2nd place in
the non-commercial division. More importantly we pray we won someone over to
Christ!
