THE YOUTH PROGRAM

Purpose:

 

"To bring Youth into a welcoming environment for fellowship and activities that help us to know and share God's love, grow our faith and light fires for Christ in our world."

 

 

Youth Leaders, John and Brenda Bosserman, held a meeting January 2, 2005 with the youth and their parents, to develop a comprehensive plan for the youth program throughout the year. Activities that took place as the result of this planning session are outlined below. Additional information for most of the items is available from the menu on the left.

 

January 9

The youth attended the 6:33 pm Contemporary Worship Service at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg.

January

During the month the youth collected candy which was sent to Staff Sergeant Robert M. Taylor in Iraq for distribution to the soldiers and Iraqi children.

February 6

For the sixth year straight, the youth sponsored "Souper Bowl Sunday." Food and money collected was donated to Grottoes Methodist Church Food Pantry.

February 6

 

Hosted a "Homemade Soup Bar" luncheon at the church. Contributed the free- will offering of $586.40 to the building fund.

February 8

Decorated the tables for the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.

February 12

Enjoyed a progressive supper held in the homes of: Gladys, Peggy and Charles Wonderley; Sally Fulton; Rufus and Barbara Powers, and Eddie and Linda Eustler.

February 20

Went ice skating at the Charlottesville Ice Park.

March 13

Held a planning meeting to prepare for Youth Sunday.

March 26

Sponsored the annual Easter Egg Hunt for children.

March 27

The youth and their families prepared the Easter Sunrise breakfast using the kitchen in the old Fellowship Hall for the last time.

April 3

Met to continue preparations for Youth Sunday, to be held May 1st.

April 10

Picked up trash along the highway for Adopt-a-Highway program.

May 1

Guided by Rev. Garriss and their youth leaders, the youth led the entire morning worship service on Youth Sunday.

June 4

 

Two Senior High Youth, Willie Patterson and Ashlee Craig graduated from Fort Defiance High School.

June 5

 

 

Every year since 2000, youth have been recognized when they achieve the privilege to drive an automobile. During worship, our minister talks with them, then presents each one with a gift from the church. This year, Ashlee Craig, Trafton Eustler, Chris Mowbray, Willie Patterson and Kortnee Raynes were recognized.

June 9

Met in the new Youth room with their families and assembled furniture.

July 10-15

Participated in the annual pilgrimage to the work camp at Summerlee, in Fayetteville, WV.

August 21

Took a canoe trip on Middle river with family and friends.

September 11

Participated in Rally Day service and luncheon.

October 23

Visited a Corn Maize in Mt. Jackson, VA.

October 27

Helped with apple peeling and making apple butter.

October 30

Picked up trash along the highway for Adopt-a-Highway program for a second time this year.

November -

Youth started selling 2006 "God's Creation" appointment Calendars as a fund raiser for the Building Fund.

November 4

For the eighth year, the youth supported "Operation Christmas Child" and used donations from the congregation to shop for and wrap boxes. The concluding ceremony was held during worship on November 20th.

The youth helped with Fall cleanup around the church on two Saturdays.

December 4

Went ice skating again at the Charlottesville Ice Park.

December 11

The youth and children participated in a wonderful Christmas Play.

December 22

The youth, Rev. Braxton, and families went Caroling at Sunnyside Retirement Community.
