Excerpts From the Communicator

MAY 2008

MAY WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

You are invited to join us on Sunday, May 4th at 6:00 p.m. for our Contemporary Worship followed by pizza and fellowship.  Please bring your friends and family.

Sunday, May 11th is Pentecost Sunday and we invite you to wear something red.  Let's truly celebrate Pentecost -- the Birthday of the church!  This year Mother's Day is on Pentecost Sunday, what a wonderful opportunity for families to worship together.  Join us!

 UPCOMING YARD SALE! ! !

Have you made plans to come to our Mt. Horeb Yard Sale?  We will be participating in the May 10th community yard sale near the Super Save in Weyers Cave.  The sale will begin at 7:00 a.m. until. . .

If you have items to contribute, please bring them to the storage room behind the kitchen (off the Fellowship Hall).  If you have additional questions or need items transported, you may contact Kemper Shreckhise at 540-234-0283. We are working hard to retire our building debt -- just a little farther to go!

Commitment Committee: Gladys Wonderley, Chair

From May 1st to June 30th Presbyterian Churches collect their Mother's Day/Father's Day offering.  Mt. Horeb has set aside Sunday, June 15th (Father's Day) to receive this offering.  This offering will continue to provide for those who just simply outlive their financial resources and wish to continue to stay at Sunnyside.

Sunnyside Communities take care of those who, through no fault of their own, do not have the financial resources to live out the end of their lives in peace, comfort and dignity.

So please, during this Mother's Day and Father's Day season, consider making a significant gift to the Sunnyside Communities Mother's Day -- Father's Day offering.  Thank you.

(More about this offering in June, as time to receive it approaches.)

On Saturday, May 10th at 6:30 p.m., the men of the church will prepare and serve a Ladies Spring Festival banquet to the ladies of Mt.  Horeb, and their guests. All women in the church will be honored at this dinner, along with their daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc., and you will certainly not want to miss this one.

 FATHER/SON BANQUET

Not to be outdone, the women of the church will reciprocate on June 14th at 6:30 p.m. with a Father/Son banquet honoring the men. What a wonderful opportunity to gather with other Mt. Horeb men to visit and enjoy a delicious dinner together. Further details will be available in the June Communicator.

 HOMECOMING PLANS

Join us on Sunday, July 20th for a joyous occasion as we prepare for a Mt. Horeb Homecoming.  We will enjoy a carry-in meal, which will follow our morning worship service.  Dr. Tom Hay, General Presbyter of the Shenandoah Presbytery, will be the keynote speaker.  We know this will be a meaningful time for our church family -- be sure to add this date to your calendar.

SPAGHETTI DINNER A SUCCESS!

The members of the Mt. Horeb Fellowship Committee want to thank all of you who turned out for the spaghetti dinner on April 18th. We had quite a nice crowd, and no one went home hungry. If you were not able to attend this dinner, do not fret, as we have lots more opportunities for fellowship and food in the months ahead.  In addition, over $900 was contributed to the building fund!

 UPCOMING EVENTS SCHEDULED

We will be hosting another after-church-fellowship hour on Sunday, May 18th, so plan to stay and enjoy some light refreshments.

A birthday celebration for the Mt. Horeb congregation is planned for the month of September, and a chicken barbecue is on the calendar for October. We will have more information regarding both of these events as the time draws near.

Work has already begun on the new Mt. Horeb Pictorial Directory, and we are sure that you will want to be a part of this publication. Details will be available as this project gets underway, as we want to keep you well informed.

Once again, we will be collecting articles to be sent to the servicemen in Iraq. During the month of May, you will be given the opportunity to place these articles in a box in the vestibule of the church. A list of acceptable and unacceptable items may be found on the bulletin board in the educational building, and a list is provided below.

THANK YOU:  (We received a thank you note from the Augusta County Historical Society.  Below are excerpts from that note.)

"On behalf of the Augusta County Historical Society, I would like to thank you and everyone at Mt. Horeb who made our Spring Meeting on March 30th possible.  Everything went smoothly and so many of our members commented on how lovely your church is and what great facilities you have available.  The Fellowship Hall worked out so well for our book signing and reception.  Mr. Powers was delightful and so good to assist us that day.

Thank you so much for allowing us to have our meeting at Mt. Horeb.  It was an enjoyable experience."

Sincerely,

Lucinda Cooke

Augusta County Historical Society

THANK YOU:

Thanks for your contributions to the Mid-West clean-up kits.  We helped with the clean-up of the floodwaters by providing "clean up buckets" with various cleaning supplies to those individual families who have lost so much.  We passed along over $700 in contributions to assist Presbyterian Disaster Relief in their work.  Thank you for your response.

"Something To Think About"

In May the church celebrates important events, Ascension Day and Pentecost.  Also, several secular events are in May, Mother's Day and Memorial Day.

We all look forward to the longer days and warmer weather.  Enjoy this lovely May!

Ascension Day

Forty days after each Easter, many Christians around the world celebrate the Ascension.  It's the day when the resurrected Jesus was raised up from the earth into heaven.  The Ascension is the prelude to Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon a gathering of people, including the apostles in Jerusalem.

The Ascension is more important than many Christians realize.  In his human body, Christ could be in only one place at a time.  The risen Christ, however, can be spiritually present in any place at any time.

The Birth of the Church

Fifty days after the Resurrection, the first Christians, most of them Jews, gathered to celebrate the Jewish harvest festival known as Pentecost.

As that gathering something happened that was so awesome and indescribable that when writing about it, St. Luke could only use metaphors.  A sound like the rush of a violent wind seemed to fill the entire house where they were meeting.  Something like tongues of fire appeared among them.

It was then that they "were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability" (Acts 2:4, NRSV).  The crowd that gathered outside was amazed and perplexed.  They wanted to know what it meant.  Some observers thought it was a gathering of drunks.

But Peter interpreted it all correctly to anyone who would listen.  He told of Christ, his life, his mission, his death and his Resurrection.  Most importantly, Peter explained that God had made Jesus both Lord and Messiah.  The proof of that was the Resurrection.

Three thousand people were so moved by Peter's words that they were baptized that day and "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of break and the prayers" (Acts 2:42, NRSV).

"And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved" (Acts 2:47, NRSV).  The Church was born that day.

Concerning Trees. . .and us

Have deep roots,

      branch out,

            be flexible,

                  keep growing on the inside,

                        bloom often,

                              show your colors,

                                    point your trunk upward,

                                      raise your limbs to heaven,

    and bring forth good fruit,

      as long as you live.

Angel Mother

Nancy Hanks Lincoln was still a young woman when she died.  Her little boy, Abraham, was only nine.  Still Nancy had taught Abraham so well that he never forgot her guidance.  He often said of his mother:  "All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother."

On one occasion, Lincoln said, "I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me.  They have clung to me all my life."

A gift for Mom

The three young children told their mother that she wasn't to lift a finger on Mother's Day.  They were going to do all the cooking.  So, they got out three pots, two frying pans, six measuring spoons, three mixing bowls, a double boiler, a chopping board and eight serving dishes. Mom said it was the best Jell-O she had ever tasted!

Thought for the day:

"Do a little more each day that you think you possibly can."

 --Lowell Thomas

"A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie."

--Tenneva Jordan
