Bus Trip to the National Cathedral

and Franciscan Monastery

Pictures by John Viel, Selah Sprinkel and Rev. & Mrs. Skip Dunford

The Fellowship Committee planned this excursion to Washington DC on July 26, 2003 to provide an opportunity for those in the group to enrich existing friendships, make new friends and broaden their horizons. Click on the pictures for a better view.

The tour bus arrived at Mount Horeb at 6:20 AM, with departure scheduled for 6:30.Thirty six passengers in a jovial mood shuffled on board and awaited the time for departure.

National Cathedral

The group arrived at the National Cathedral ahead of  the time for the tour - -

so they went into the Bishop's Garden to take a walk to pass the time and enjoy the flowers and scenery

Bill Sprinkel and his mother took a break from walking in the garden to relax in the shade

Others rested in front of the gift shop under a fig tree

As the time for the tour grew closer everyone assembled at the front door and waited for it to start

Our Pastor noticed that a small section of the iron gate contained a scene from the Bible showing Moses and the burning bush

Moving inside and viewing the massive and ornate structure leaves one speechless. It is awesome!

The Nave of the cathedral is ninety feet high and seats as many as  3,000 people. There are many large stained glass windows depicting Biblical and modern events. The theme of the one on the left is "Creation" and it contains a rock from the moon in the center if the top circle.

Members of the group compare notes at the end of the tour. Additional pictures and information is available at http://www.cathedral.org

The next stop and tour is at the Franciscan Monastery. Our guide, a Monk, noted that all Monks in the Franciscan order have taken a vow of poverty.

Ashley Craig and John Viel relax and wait patiently for the tour to begin

The Monk who acted as guide described the significance of each scene and provided the appropriate biblical references. More scenes within the Monastery are available on their website www.myfranciscan.com

The group visited Union Station in downtown D.C. between tours for lunch and arrived back at Mount Horeb where the trip ended at 6:30 PM.
